These lovely pellets of solid ruthenium were made by melting the powdered metal in an arc furnace. Unfortunately all the less common PGMs (platinum group metals) tend to available only as powders commercially. This is because their main application are as catalysts or alloying agents and finely divided, ugly gray powder is just fine for these purposes. They look much neater heated to a few thousands degrees centigrade under a vacuum so they melt!
