Be sure to watch the video associated with this element. You can see what happens when solid iodine is heated in a tube similar to this one. The most obvious effect is the generation of a cloud of beautiful violet vapor. But if you watch carefully, you will see that iodine hardly becomes liquid before becoming a gas. Instead it sublimes. The reverse effect can be seen in the purple cloud which, as it cools, becomes flecked with glinting crystals of solid metallic iodine.
