Mercury
A beautiful bright, silvery, dense liquid metal. It is toxic and combines with many other elements.
Jar with magnetic stirrer Jar with magnetic stirrer.
Inspired by Calder's remarkable mercury fountain sculpture at the Jean Miro Foundation in Barcelona, we are working on a new design for safely displaying flowing mercury within the confines of a six inch cube. In the meantime, this simple magnetic stirrer at least demonstrates that mercury is a liquid at room temperature. Unfortunately, it also demonstrates that mercury easily becomes contaminated with a scum that floats on the surface. This has probably been produced as a result of a reaction with the silicone sealant that we used to secure the lid of the jar and prevent any fumes escaping.

 Thermometer Thermometer.
The days of mercury thermometers may be numbered. Increasingly they are being phased out in favour of electronic models. Hopefully a few of these elegantly simply yet highly accurate devices will survive as laboratory instruments and at weather stations.

 Cinnabar Cinnabar.
Cinnabar is the principal ore of mercury metal. Due to the ease with which it gives up its mercury content it has been mined since ancient times. Prior to this use, it was as employed as a pigment as long as 30,000 years ago. Cinnabar is mainly mined in the massive state, when it is opaque and scarlet to reddish-gray in color with an adamantine, submetallic or dull lustre. It also forms transparent gem-like crystals, the best of which are currently being found in China.
