A soft, silvery-white, very light metal which reacts explosively with water and which rapidly tarnishes in air.

This ampoule is filled with pieces of sodium that were freshly cut under mineral oil to prevent oxidation. The space at the top is filled with argon gas to exclude oxygen. Hopefully they will remain reasonably shiny for a long time to come.
