Barium
A light, soft, silvery alkaline metal which reacts easily with air and water and is often stored under oil.

Barium is the best "getter" material and it widely used in the vacuum industry to scavenge the very last molecules of gas from a sealed tube. It will react with all the main gases in the atmosphere (including carbon dioxide and water vapor) leaving only the inert noble gases. Unfortunately this ready affinity for atmospheric traces makes it virtually impossible to produce an enduring shiny sample of the metal. Storing under mineral oil, with argon in the air space above, is the best bet. But as you can see with this sample, even then slight traces of dissolved oxygen cause the surface to darken.

A barium meal offers no nourishment, but it may allow a doctor to find out if anything is wrong with you. This is barium sulfate which is the main ingredient. When ingested, either via the mouth or via the opposite end of the alimentary canal, the heavy barium atoms coat the lining of the digestive tract. As a result, the oesophagus, stomach and intestines stand out very clearly on an X-ray image, allowing doctors to study the detailed structure and revealing ulcers, tumors and other abnormalities.
