Lumps ampouled under argon.
Gadolinium is more difficult to cut than any of the lighter lanthanides and, in common with the all the rest of the group with higher atomic numbers, relatively unreactive. Nevertheless we have decided to ampoule them all as a protection against tarnishing. Gadolinium has one of the highest magnetic strengths in the periodic table and so finds uses in coating for hard disks. It is also very effective at slowing neutrons and is extensively used in the nuclear industry as an additive in fuel rods to promote efficient "burning" of the uranium.
