A soft, silvery lanthanide metal that is reasonably stable in dry air. It is one of four elements to be named after the town of Ytterby in Sweden.

These pieces of ytterbium metal have a slightly yellow sheen, probably due to a thin layer of oxide. They are now ampouled under argon which should protect them from further tarnishing. As with many of the rare earths, pure samples of the metal have only become available in the last 50 years as the technology for separating them using solvent extraction has been developed.
