Lutetium
A hard, heavy, dark silvery transition metal which belongs to group 3 but which is often counted as the last of the lanthanides. It is very rare and costly.

It is probably not necessary to seal these pieces of lutetium under argon, but we would like all the samples to remain in good condition as long as possible and all the rare earths show some tendency to oxidize. These rather lovely pieces of pure lutetium are probably distilled. The crystal structure of the condensed metal is evident in the fibrous edges of the cut material. Along with platinum and scandium, lutetium is among the more costly samples in this display.
